The Swedish School of Sustainable Waste Management

The school is a part of Usitall which is based in the city of Linköping, just 200 km south of Stockholm. Linköping itself has a long history of sustainable waste management and a strong tradition of efficient energy usage.

The school has been developed to for politicians and policy makers within the waste and energy sectors, and our mission is to help our participants realise the shift away from the burden of landfill of waste in favour of more economic and ecologic alternatives in the waste hierarchy.

Together with some of the world’s leading experts within the field of waste management and efficient energy systems, participants will acquire the necessary knowledge and experience to pioneer sustainable waste management and to manage public opinion.

What makes the school unique is the municipal ownership in combination with influence from the University of Linköping together with a fully operational waste and energy management system, and a remarkable track record that goes back 50 years.

With waste as the primary source of energy, Linköping has reduced its CO2 emissions by
55 % relative to 1990, and with a recycling level in the country at 49 % only 1 % of all waste goes to landfill.
